Acts 4:34 (23–37) “For there was not a needy person among them,”
As we noted earlier the Jewish leadership was not happy with the results of the crucifixion of Jesus. Now instead of it being just a hundred or so it was thousands. The five thousand mentioned in 4:4 probably included the three thousand and 120 from the day of Pentecost.
It is likely that the Council forbad the Jewish merchants, approved by the temple to do business, to do any business with those who claimed to be followers of Jesus and the Twelve. This would have made it very hard for the poor who seemed to be in the majority. So, those believers with money made large donations to the church so no one would starve.
This doesn’t mean that the “rich” sold everything they had. That was not necessary and has never been a proof of ones faith. Since those days the church has experienced many things and has always found a way to keep it’s members as safe and well as possible.
What was a proof was their willingness to do what was necessary to improve the spiritual and physical well being of the less fortunate in the church, spiritually or physically. So the question for us today is what are you doing at your church to help others with there needs?
Alertness is not just to danger. It involves paying attention to opportunities God presents for real change, right now.
