Numbers 31:17 (1-54) “Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man intimately.”
How seriously do you take your job?
This was a very brutal act. The soldiers had already killed, in battle, every adult male. And, now they were to be executioners of women and children. Even though these were the people who seduced the men of Israel to inter marry, weakening their ties with God, they were humans.
I say this not because I feel sorry for the dead, but because I feel for the soldiers. Soldiering is not an easy task, as some may think. The movies are fond of making soldiers appear like crazy people or whiners. Real soldiers are neither. Real soldiers are men, men who have been entrusted with the task of protecting their own from the threat of an enemy. It is a dirty job that will leave emotional scares on each one. But they realize the price of securing the freedoms of their families and way of life as worth the effort.
It is that way of life that should keep spiritual soldiers focused on the task at hand, to disciple the nations and to defend the faith knowing that some will never listen and die in their sins. The Godly have this weight to carry until the Lord returns and relieves them of their burden.
Courage involves taking a stand for what is right even if it will cost you.
