2 Peter 3:10 (10-18) “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief,”

Are you ready?

Whereas in 1 Thessalonians 5:2 Paul’s emphasis is on the beginning of that day of the Lord, here Peter’s emphasis is on the end. The day of the Lord involves three events, the Tribulation, the Millennial kingdom and the destruction of all we know (3:7, 10) so that a new heaven and earth may be constructed for us, 3:13.

The old, in which we now live, has to be destroyed because it has been infected with sin. All of it is a reminder of what we were. So it needs to be completely erased and started over, it might not include a sea, Revelation 21:1. It will be physical because we were created to live in a physical universe, but it will be different.

Thinking about these things brings up many questions about how we will live, but again, we don’t know when these events will begin, only that it will happen when we least expect them, 3:10. Because of that it should be the first thing on our minds every day as we wake.

May I suggest that we seriously consider enrolling in Peter’s School for Spiritual Enrichment, found in 2 Peter 1:3-11? These steps will help you build character in your life that will help you spot those without character who are here to test you and carry you away, if they can. This will not always seem so easy. Every day we need to get prepared to meet whatever the next batch of challenges will be, challenges that will require our full concentration as we work towards Godliness. One step at a time!

Determination involves learning how to transform the impossible into the possible.

2 Pedro 3:10 (10-18) “Pero el día del Señor vendrá como ladrón,”

¿Estás listo?

Mientras que en 1 Tesalonicenses 5:2 el énfasis de Pablo está en el comienzo de ese día del Señor, aquí el énfasis de Pedro está en el final. El día del Señor involucra tres eventos, la Tribulación, el Reino Milenio y la destrucción de todo lo que conocemos (3:7, 10) para que se construyan un cielo y una tierra nuevos para nosotros, 3:13.

Lo viejo, en el que vivimos ahora, tiene que ser destruido porque ha sido infectado con el pecado. Todo es un recordatorio de lo que fuimos. Por lo tanto, debe borrarse por completo y comenzar de nuevo, es posible que no incluya un mar, Apocalipsis 21:1. Será físico porque fuimos creados para vivir en un universo físico, pero será diferente.

Al pensar en estas cosas surgen muchas preguntas sobre cómo viviremos, pero nuevamente, no sabemos cuándo comenzarán estos eventos, solo que sucederán cuando menos los esperemos, 3:10. Por eso, debería ser lo primero en nuestras mentes todos los días al despertar.

¿Puedo sugerir que consideremos seriamente inscribirnos en la Escuela de Enriquecimiento Espiritual de Pedro, que se encuentra en 2 Pedro 1:3-11? Estos pasos te ayudarán a construir el carácter en tu vida que te ayudarán a identificar a aquellos sin carácter que están aquí para ponerte a prueba y desviarte, si pueden. Esto no siempre parecerá tan fácil. Todos los días tenemos que estar preparados para afrontar cualquiera que sea el próximo grupo de desafíos, desafíos que requerirán nuestra total concentración mientras trabajamos hacia la piedad. ¡Un paso a la vez!

Determinación implica aprender a transformar lo imposible en lo posible.

2 Peter 3:9 (1-9) “The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.”

How will Jesus find you?

So, Peter continues to remind his readers that God has a plan, we are involved and He has not forgotten us. Even though there are those who believe otherwise, 3:3-5. Remember God promised never to destroy the earth with water after the Noah’s flood but he has decided to destroy it by fire, Genesis 9:11, Isaiah 66:15.

Peter helps us to see that God doesn’t perceive time in the same way we do, after all, He is God, 3:8. When Peter says that for God “one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years is like one day” he is telling us something about God. Time passes for us but for God it is always now.

What we should understand is that the more it seems like God is delaying His coming the more time we have to help people avoid the fiery judgment to come.

Diligence involves applying the right amount of energy and concentration to the mission God has called us to do.

2 Pedro 3:9 (1-9) “El Señor no se tarda en cumplir su promesa, según algunos entienden la tardanza, sino que es paciente para con vosotros, no queriendo que nadie perezca, sino que todos vengan al arrepentimiento.”

¿Cómo te encontrará Jesús?

Entonces, Pedro continúa recordando a sus lectores que Dios tiene un plan, que estamos involucrados y que no nos ha olvidado. Aunque hay quienes creen lo contrario, 3:3-5. Recuerde que Dios prometió nunca destruir la tierra con agua después del diluvio de Noé, pero ha decidido destruirla con fuego, Génesis 9:11, Isaías 66:15.

Pedro nos ayuda a ver que Dios no percibe el tiempo de la misma manera que nosotros, después de todo, Él es Dios, 3:8. Cuando Pedro dice que para Dios “un día es como mil años, y mil años como un día”, nos está diciendo algo acerca de Dios. El tiempo pasa para nosotros pero para Dios siempre es ahora.

Lo que debemos entender es que cuanto más parece que Dios está retrasando Su venida, más tiempo tenemos para ayudar a las personas a evitar el juicio ardiente que vendrá.

Diligencia involucra aplicar la cantidad correcta de energía y concentración a la misión que Dios nos ha llamado a realizar.

2 Peter 2:17 (4-22) “These are springs without water and mists driven by a storm,”

How well are you handling distractions?

Finally Peter tells us something we didn’t realize about these false teachers. They actually do know and understand the Gospel message and what it means, 2:20. But knowing and applying are two very different things. In a way they are like the seed that fell in the thorns that have been choked out by the world in Jesus’ parable of the sower, Matthew 13.

They are so stuck to there impulses that they can’t let go. So they decide to live with it, to enjoy it and to do their best to get others to fall into their own addictions. Peter calls them unreasoning animals, 2:12, 22 (and that is an offense to animals).

But what is worse is that they actually get people, even believers, to fall for their groundless promises. This is why Peter says they are “springs without water”, because they offer what they can’t deliver.

Determination involves not allowing difficulties to cause me to change right decisions.

2 Pedro 2:17 (4-22) “Estos son manantiales sin agua, bruma impulsada por una tormenta,”

¿Qué tan bien manejas las distracciones?

Finalmente, Pedro nos dice algo de lo que no nos dimos cuenta acerca de estos falsos maestros. Ellos realmente conocen y entienden el mensaje del Evangelio y lo que significa, 2:20. Pero conocer y aplicar son dos cosas muy diferentes. En cierto modo, son como la semilla que cayó en los espinos que el mundo ha estrangulado en la parábola del sembrador de Jesús, Mateo 13.

Están tan aferrados a sus impulsos que no pueden dejarlos ir. Entonces deciden vivir con ello, disfrutarlo y hacer todo lo posible para que otros caigan en sus propias adicciones. Pedro los llama animales irracionales, 2:12, 22 (y eso es una ofensa para los animales).

Pero lo peor es que consiguen que la gente, incluso los creyentes, caigan en sus infundadas promesas. Por eso Pedro dice que son “manantiales sin agua”, porque ofrecen lo que no pueden entregar.

Determinación involucra no dejar que dificultades me causan cambiar decisiones correctas.

2 Peter 2:9 (1-9) “then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation,”

How well are you handling temptation?

Now Peter continues the theme of the guaranteed judgment of those who twist and distort the truth for fun, stupidity and money (2:1-3) by giving us three illustrations the results of the failure to continue adding to our faith, 1:5-7.

First Satan himself deceived the angels and got them thrown into hell (Jude 6), then Noah remained loyal to God by warning the world of judgment he and his family avoided (Genesis 6) and finally Lot who also remained loyal to God but didn’t warn anyone of judgment and lost his family (Genesis 19).

While many professional preachers today have been emphasizing the loving compassionate God, they have ignored the just God of the rest of the Bible. Yet, if we stay diligent we will not stumble, 1:10.

Endurance involves getting rid of those things that are keeping me from being useful to my Lord.

2 Pedro 2:9 (1-9) “el Señor, entonces, sabe rescatar de tentación a los piadosos,”

¿Qué tan bien manejas la tentación?

Ahora Pedro continúa con el tema del juicio garantizado de aquellos que tuercen y distorsionan la verdad por diversión, estupidez y dinero (2:1-3) al darnos tres ilustraciones de los resultados del fracaso de continuar añadiendo a nuestra fe, 1:5 -7.

Primero Satanás mismo engañó a los ángeles que entonces fueron arrojó al infierno (Judas 6), luego Noé permaneció leal a Dios al advertir al mundo de juicio que él y su familia evitaron (Génesis 6) y finalmente Lot, quien también permaneció leal a Dios pero no advirtió a cualquiera del juicio y perdió a su familia (Génesis 19).

Si bien muchos predicadores profesionales de hoy han enfatizado al Dios amoroso y compasivo, han ignorado al Dios justo del resto de la Biblia. Sin embargo, si nos mantenemos diligentes no tropezaremos, 1:10.

Persistencia involucra deshaciéndome de las cosas que me impiden ser de uso a mi Señor.

2 Peter 2:1 (1:16-2:3) “just as there will be false teachers among you,”

How well do you know your Bible?

Despite the truth, there will always be false prophets. Peter wants to remind us that the Word of God has been given to us by the eyewitness testimony of the Old Testament prophets and more recently by the New Testament prophets. Every experience we have must be verified against the testimony of those two testaments.

These false prophets will come telling us that they have had their visions and encounters and are speaking truth. It is hard to argue against what a person has experienced, because they had it, not you. But the measure of its truth is not it’s reasonableness, it is whether it agrees with the two testaments. If it doesn’t agree with the two testaments then I for one wouldn’t build anything on it.

But, interestingly a false prophet is one who has failed to take step two in Peter’s process of spiritual development. That failure may indicate that they did not take step one, 1:5. So he may look and sometimes act like us but he may very well not be one of us and never may have been.

Don’t be too angry with them, because their future has been established from long ago in the book of Deuteronomy 32:35. Better, be angry with yourself because not knowing the Word of God you fell to their tricks.

Attentiveness involves distinguishing the difference between the Word of God and the words of men.

2 Pedro 2:1 (1:16-2:3) “así como habrá también falsos maestros entre vosotros,”

¿Qué tan bien conoce su Biblia?

A pesar de la verdad, siempre habrá falsos profetas. Pedro quiere recordarnos que la Palabra de Dios nos han sido dada por el testimonio de los profetas del Antiguo Testamento y más recientemente por los profetas del Nuevo Testamento. Cada experiencia que tenemos debe ser verificada con el testimonio de esos dos testamentos.

Estos falsos profetas vendrán diciéndonos que han tenido sus visiones y encuentros y están hablando la verdad. Es difícil argumentar en contra de lo que una persona ha experimentado, porque lo tuvo el y no usted. Pero la medida de su verdad no es su razonabilidad, es si está de acuerdo con los dos testamentos. Si no está de acuerdo con los dos testamentos, entonces yo no construiría nada sobre eso.

Pero, curiosamente, un falso profeta es aquel que no ha tomado el segundo paso en el proceso de desarrollo espiritual de Pedro. Ese fracaso puede indicar que no dieron el primer paso, 1:5. Por lo tanto, puede parecer y a veces actuar como nosotros, pero es muy posible que no sea uno de nosotros y nunca lo haya sido.

No se enoje demasiado con ellos, porque su futuro ha sido establecido desde hace mucho tiempo en el libro de Deuteronomio 32:35. Mejor, enfócate contigo mismo porque sin conocer la Palabra de Dios caíste en sus trampas.

Ser atento implica distinguir la diferencia entre la Palabra de Dios y las palabras de los hombres.

2 Peter 1:21 (12-21) “for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.”

The Bible is verifiable?

Peter reminds his readers that the Bible is a not just a religious document, but a historical one as well.

In 1:16 he refers to the fact that in those days many Jews had been waiting for the coming of the Messiah. This was because they had read or had been taught that according to the prophet Daniel the Messiah was scheduled to come within 490 years of the rebuilding of the city walls of Jerusalem in Nehemiah’s day, Daniel 9.

In verses 1:1-19 Peter continues to show how what was prophesied has come to pass. Daniel specifically pointed out that when the Messiah cam He would be rejected and killed by His own people. That also happened.

The New Testament clarifies the Old Testament, while the Old informs the New. This is to say that both testaments verify each other. Coupled with none Biblical documentation, directly and indirectly the Bible we hold in our hands today is the message of God to mankind. As believers in that message we need to help other understand and accept it.

Courage involves taking a stand for what is right when it costs you.

2 Peter 1:14 (12-21) “knowing that the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent,”

We all pretty much understand that we will die. But what would we do if we knew when?

I’m sure that some of us would like to experience something we would otherwise have never done. We would go somewhere we would have never gone. We would stand up and say something because there would be no more time to put it off.

Peter was considered a troublemaker like Paul by Jewish and Roman authorities alike. On a number of occasions Paul had to sneak out of town to avoid assassination, I’m sure Peter was on that same list along with other believers. Like Paul, Peter knew he could be killed at any time. This is what the word imminent means, knowing it can happen any time, but not knowing the exact time. When he wrote this letter, Peter had an idea that it was closer than ever and not because of age.

I have no idea when my time will be up. But I know that it can happen at any time and I want to be found busy for my Lord when it happens. I want to have said and done what I wanted to say and do before it’s too late. As believers we need to live as if today is our last day. And even if a friend of yours has heard the gospel before and rejected it, tell him again, 1:12. Today might be your last chance.

Courage involves taking a stand for what is right when it costs you.

2 Pedro 1:14 (12-21) “sabiendo que mi separación del cuerpo terrenal es inminente,”

Todos entendemos bastante bien que moriremos. Pero, ¿qué haríamos si supiéramos cuándo?

Estoy seguro de que a algunos de nosotros nos gustaría experimentar algo que de otro modo nunca hubiéramos hecho. Iríamos a algún lugar al que nunca hubiéramos ido. Nos poníamos de pie y decíamos algo porque no habría tiempo para posponerlo.

Pedro fue considerado un alborotador como Pablo por las autoridades Judías y Romanas por igual. En varias ocasiones Pablo tuvo que escaparse de la ciudad para evitar el asesinato, estoy seguro de que Pedro estaba en la misma lista junto con otros creyentes. Como Pablo, Pedro sabía que podía morir en cualquier momento. Esto es lo que significa la palabra inminente, saber que puede suceder en cualquier momento, pero no saber la hora exacta. Cuando escribió esta carta, Pedro tuvo la idea de que estaba más cerca que nunca y no por la edad.

No tengo idea de cuándo se acabará mi tiempo. Pero sé que puede suceder en cualquier momento y quiero estar ocupado para mi Señor cuando suceda. Quiero haber dicho y hecho lo que quería decir y hacer antes de que sea demasiado tarde. Como creyentes, debemos vivir como si hoy fuera nuestro último día. E incluso si un amigo suyo ha escuchado el evangelio antes y lo ha rechazado, dígaselo nuevamente, 1:12. Hoy podría ser tu última oportunidad.

Valentía involucra tomando una posición por lo que es correcto cuando te cuesta.

2 Peter 1:12 (12-15) “Therefore, I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them, and have been established in the truth which is present with you.”

What have you already forgotten?

There have been many times that I felt I had just preached or taught on a topic I was about to repeat. And, there have been times when members of my Sunday school class recognize a repetition of a point I made a couple of Sundays ago.

That is why these words of Peter are heart felt for me. Peter understood the necessity of repeating, even the basics to each other. We no longer live in an information age; we live in an information tsunami. Many of the distractions we face today are far more dangerous than when I served in the military. And, they are getting more and more dangerous, negative and hostile.

So, don’t get angry at the pastor because you think today’s message is the same as last weeks. Maybe God is allowing that because you weren’t paying attention last week?

Attentiveness involves listening to what is most important with the intent to do it.

2 Pedro 1:12 (12-15) “Por tanto, siempre estaré listo para recordaros estas cosas, aunque vosotros ya las sabéis y habéis sido confirmados en la verdad que está presente en vosotros.”

¿Qué has olvidado ya?

Ha habido muchas veces que sentí que acababa de predicar o enseñar sobre un tema que estaba a punto de repetir. Y ha habido momentos en que los miembros de mi clase de escuela dominical reconocen una repetición de un punto que hice un par de domingos.

Es por eso que estas palabras de Pedro son sentidas por mí. Pedro comprendió la necesidad de repetirse, incluso lo básico, el uno al otro. Ya no vivimos en la era de la información; vivimos en un tsunami de información. Muchas de las distracciones que enfrentamos hoy son mucho más peligrosas que cuando serví en el ejército. Y se están volviendo cada vez más peligrosos, negativos y hostiles.

Por lo tanto, no se enoje con el pastor porque crea que el mensaje de hoy es el mismo que el dio la última semana. ¿Quizás Dios está permitiendo eso porque no prestaste atención la semana pasada?

Ser atento involucra poner atención a lo mas importante con la intención de practicarla.

2 Peter 1:10 (1-11) “Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you;”

How diligent are you, really?

This passage is not talking about salvation by works. There is no way to earn a gift. The reason why Peter gives us these eight steps towards spiritual maturity is so that we can confirm for ourselves that God is really working in our lives. Peter says, “if these qualities are yours and increasing” in 1:8, implying that we are to grow up in our trust of our Lord Jesus Christ (the first step). As we grow in that faith He will keep us, increasingly, from falling back into old habits.

The difficulty we seem to have is that as we attempt to apply these steps to every area of our lives we meet with resistance. There is that fear of what other people will think as we make changes in our lives that they will see. But the greater resistance will come from ourselves as we have to let go of things we’ve grown accustom to. This is why we can’t let up in our working through the eight steps.

When Joshua was given command of Israel God told him that the only way he would have success in his job was to “be careful” to follow Gods steps for success, Joshua 1:7. If he failed to do so there would be no success. Joshua’s story is a picture of success when he followed the formula and failure when he didn’t. In verses 1:5 & 10 Peter gives us that same warning when he says to us be diligent.

Diligence involves applying the right amount of energy and concentration to the mission God has called us to do.

2 Pedro 1:10 (1-11) “Así que, hermanos, sed tanto más diligentes para hacer firme vuestro llamado y elección de parte de Dios;”

¿Qué tan diligente eres realmente?

Este pasaje no se refiere a la salvación por obras. No hay forma de ganar un regalo. La razón por la que Pedro nos da estos ocho pasos hacia la madurez espiritual es para que podamos confirmar por nosotros mismos que Dios realmente está obrando en nuestras vidas. Pedro dice que si, “estas virtudes, al estar en vosotros y al abundar” en 1:8, implicando que debemos crecer en nuestra confianza en nuestro Señor Jesucristo (el primer paso). A medida que crecemos en esa fe, Él nos impedirá, cada vez más, volver a caer en los viejos hábitos.

La dificultad que parecemos tener es que cuando intentamos aplicar estos pasos en cada área de nuestra vida, encontramos resistencia. Existe ese miedo de lo que otras personas pensarán cuando hagamos cambios en nuestras vidas que ellos verán. Pero la mayor resistencia vendrá de nosotros mismos, ya que tenemos que dejar por un lado las cosas a las que nos hemos acostumbrado. Es por eso que no podemos dejar de trabajar en los ocho pasos.

Cuando a Josué se le dio el mando de Israel, Dios le dijo que la única forma en que tendría éxito en su trabajo era “cuídate” de seguir los pasos de Dios para el éxito, Josué 1:7. Si no lo hacía, no tendría éxito. La historia de Joshua es retrato de éxito cuando siguió la fórmula y de fracaso cuando no lo hizo. En los versículos 1:5 y 10, Pedro nos da la misma advertencia cuando nos dice que seamos diligentes.

Diligencia involucra aplicar la cantidad correcta de energía y concentración a la misión que Dios nos ha llamado a realizar.

2 Peter 1:7 (1-11) “and in your godliness brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love.”

How do you express your love?

The goal and the basis for these steps are the same… the love of God. These steps started because God loved us enough to keep us from His final judgment on all men. But, He then wants us to change and become what He originally intended us to be… beings that love as He does.

After you have experienced the first five or six steps you get to that place where you now have the opportunity to apply the virtue, knowledge, self-control and patience you have studied on others. And the first and best place to exercise the love of God (godliness) is with those who believe as you… the church, 1:7. They are more likely to accept your efforts and be kind enough to correct you, lovingly, when you are too aggressive or not aggressive enough in your well doing.

Once you’ve had some practice there, it becomes easier to apply you faith outside the church, easier in that you have a better idea what to expect. When Jesus told us to go to “all the world and make disciples,” as He did, it is to apply the same love He applied to us that we were called, Matthew 28:19. There is no race to talk to as many people as possible, there is only the expectation that He is coming and we should be busy about our Fathers business.

Faith involves investing my resources and myself in things that will matter in eternity.

2 Pedro 1:7 (1-11) “a la piedad, fraternidad y a la fraternidad, amor.”

¿Como expresas tu amor?

El objetivo y la base de estos pasos son los mismos … el amor de Dios. Estos pasos comenzaron porque Dios nos amó lo suficiente como para alejarnos de Su juicio final sobre todos los hombres. Pero luego Él quiere que cambiemos y seamos lo que Él originalmente quiso que fuéramos… seres que aman como Él lo ama.

Después de haber experimentado los primeros cinco o seis pasos, llega a ese lugar donde ahora tienes la oportunidad de aplicar la virtud, el conocimiento, el dominio propio y la perseverancia que ha estudiado en los demás. Y el primer y mejor lugar para ejercitar el amor de Dios (piedad) es con aquellos que creen como tú… la iglesia, 1:7. Es más probable que acepten sus esfuerzos y sean lo suficientemente amables como para corregirte, con amor, cuando usted es demasiado agresivo o no lo suficientemente agresivo en su bien.

Una vez que haya tenido algo de práctica allí, será más fácil aplicar su fe fuera de la iglesia, más fácil porque tendrá una mejor idea de qué esperar. Cuando Jesús nos dijo que fuéramos a hacer “discípulos de todas las naciones”, como Él lo hizo, es para aplicar el mismo amor que nos aplicó al que fuimos llamados, Mateo 28:19. No hay prisa para hablar con tanta gente como sea posible, solo existe la expectativa de que Él vendrá y deberíamos estar ocupados con los asuntos de nuestro Padre.

Fe implica invertir mis recursos y yo mismo en las cosas que importan para la eternidad.
