Romans 12:12 (1–15) “rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer,”

Do you know your spiritual gift?

Exhortation is the next gift Paul mentions the Holy Spirit giving us (12:8). In verse 12:12 we find the advice for that gift.

The word Paul uses here for exhorter or exhortation is from the base word used to describe the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer. John describes Him as the Helper in John 14:16 and as our Advocated, 1 John 2:1.

The word “parakletos” literally means to draw near. It was used of a person who would be assigned to help you through a situation, a helper an aide. It was also used a lot to describe the role of an advocate in a court of law, your defender.

Paul tells us that for all practical purposes the exhorter is a cheerleader, “rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation”. But the exhorter knows that what he and the person he is trying to encourage needs is to pray. When we look at Jesus in the Gospels we see a man devoted to prayer, always looking for His Father’s direction, that is what kept Jesus on target.

When I pray for someone I’m counseling I ask God to open not just their mind, but also their heart to the will of God. There is nothing more discouraging to an exhorter than the person who refuses to commit to God’s direction because the goal of the one who exhorts is to “present every man complete in Christ”, Colossians 1:28.

Romanos 12:12 (1–15) “gozándoos en la esperanza, perseverando en el sufrimiento, dedicados a la oración,”

¿Conoces tu don espiritual?

La exhortación es el próximo regalo que Pablo menciona que el Espíritu Santo nos da (12:8). En el versículo 12:12 encontramos el consejo para ese don.

La palabra que Pablo usa aquí para exhortar o exhortador es de la palabra base usada para describir el papel del Espíritu Santo en la vida del creyente. Juan lo describe como el Consolador en Juan 14:16 y como nuestro Abogado, 1 Juan 2:1.

La palabra “parakletos” literalmente significa acercarse. Fue utilizado por una persona que sería asignada para ayudarlo en una situación, un ayudante o un asistente. También se usó mucho para describir el papel de un defensor en un tribunal de justicia, su defensor.

Pablo nos dice que, prácticamente, el exhortador es un animador, “gozándoos en la esperanza, perseverando en el sufrimiento”. Pero el exhortador sabe que lo que él y la persona que está tratando de alentar necesita es orar. Cuando miramos a Jesús en los Evangelios, vemos a un hombre dedicado a la oración, siempre buscando la dirección de su Padre, eso es lo que mantuvo a Jesús enfocado.

Cuando oro por alguien a quien estoy aconsejando, le pido a Dios que abra no solo su mente, sino también su corazón a la voluntad de Dios. No hay nada más desalentador para un exhortador que la persona que se niega a comprometerse a la dirección de Dios porque el objetivo de quien exhorta es “presentar a todo hombre perfecto en Cristo”, Colosenses 1:28.

Romans 12:11 (1-15) “not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord;”

Do you know your spiritual gift?

These gifts of the Spirit are not mentioned in order of importance because they’re designed to help the local church work better. So now Paul mentions the Holy Spirit giving us the gift of teaching (12:7), and the advice for that gift is found in verse 12:11.

Personally, I have no problem getting excited (fervent in spirit, Acts 18:24-25) when I’m teaching (there is nothing worse than a teacher who is not excited about what they are teaching, if you’re not interested in what you’re teaching how do you expect your students to be?). It’s before I open my mouth that the dread of failing takes over. Maybe it’s because I always feel I haven’t been diligent enough in my studies.

Yet, the real issue for the one gifted to teach is to remember that you are serving God. His goal is that we present the truth in as clear and loving a manner as we can. When I remember the kind of God I’m serving and the message He wants me to deliver I get all excited and that spills over in diligence to study and prepare for whoever wishes to hear.

Romanos 12:11 (1-15) “no seáis perezosos en lo que requiere diligencia; fervientes en espíritu, sirviendo al Señor,”

¿Conoces tu don espiritual?

Estos dones del Espíritu no se mencionan en orden de importancia porque están diseñados para ayudar a la iglesia local a trabajar mejor. Así que ahora Pablo menciona que el Espíritu Santo nos da el don de la enseñanza (12:7), y el consejo para ese don se encuentra en el versículo 12:11.

Personalmente, no tengo ningún problema en excitarme (ferviente en espíritu, Hechos 18:24-25) cuando enseño (no hay nada peor que un maestro que no está entusiasmado con lo que está enseñando, si no te interesa en lo que estás enseñando ¿Cómo esperas que tus alumnos sean entusiasmados?). Es antes de abrir mi boca que el miedo a fallar se apodera. Tal vez sea porque siempre siento que no he sido lo suficientemente diligente en mis estudios.

Sin embargo, el verdadero problema para el que está dotado para enseñar es recordar que está sirviendo a Dios. Su objetivo es que presentemos la verdad de la manera más clara y amorosa que podamos. Cuando recuerdo el tipo de Dios al que estoy sirviendo y el mensaje que Él quiere que entregue, me emociono y eso se extiende con diligencia para estudiar y prepararme para quien quiera escuchar.

Romans 12:10 (1-15) “Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor;”

Do you know your spiritual gift?

The next gift Paul mentions the Holy Spirit giving us is the gift of service (12:7), and the advice for that gift is found in verse 12:10.

The word Paul uses for service here is the Greek word diakonia or deacon. Remember in the book of Acts (6:1-7) that the Apostles set aside certain men to wait on tables (feeding the believers who had lost everything for their faith) so that they could concentrate on spiritual matters. When you see the word “deacon” in the New Testament it refers to an official position in the local church, 1 Timothy 3:8-13. Otherwise it just means to serve or a servant.

Obviously we are to help each other out in whatever the need is, but after a while some church people begin to abuse the privilege of being served by the church, 1 Timothy 5:16. This is when the one with that gift (the ability to not just see a physical need, but meet that need) needs to remember whom he is really serving and why they need to work together with the rest of the local congregation.

The server must develop a heart for the people of God. As we serve the Lord, and we serve each other we have the honor of serving our fellow citizens of heaven, 1 Peter 2:9-10.

Romanos 12:10 (1-15) “Sed afectuosos unos con otros con amor fraternal; con honra, daos preferencia unos a otros;”

¿Conoces tu don espiritual?

El próximo regalo que Pablo menciona que el Espíritu Santo nos da es el don de servicio (12:7), y el consejo para ese don se encuentra en el versículo 12:10.

La palabra que Pablo usa para el servicio aquí es la palabra griega diakonia o diácono. Recuerde en el libro de Hechos (6:1-7) que los Apóstoles apartaron a ciertos hombres para que sirvieran las mesas (alimentando a los creyentes que habían perdido todo por su fe) para que pudieran concentrarse en asuntos espirituales. Cuando vea la palabra “diácono” en el Nuevo Testamento se refiere a una posición oficial en la iglesia local, 1 Timoteo 3:8-13. De lo contrario, solo significa servir o sirviente.

Obviamente, debemos ayudarnos mutuamente en cualquier necesidad, pero después de un tiempo algunas personas de la iglesia comienzan a abusar del privilegio de ser servidos por la iglesia, 1 Timoteo 5:16. Esto es cuando el que tiene ese don (la capacidad de no solo ver una necesidad física, sino satisfacer esa necesidad) necesita recordar a quién realmente está sirviendo y por qué necesitan trabajar juntos con el resto de la congregación local.

El servidor debe desarrollar un corazón para el pueblo de Dios. Cuando servimos al Señor y nos servimos unos a otros, tenemos el honor de servir a nuestros conciudadanos del cielo, 1 Pedro 2:9-10.

Romans 12:9 (3-15) “Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good.”

Do you know your spiritual gift?

As I said previously, if you have matured enough and have discovered the spiritual gift the Holy Spirit has given you, and in this case it is the gift of prophecy, then you need to listen to the advice of verse 12:9. In the Old Testament the prophet was God’s messenger delivering God’s message and only that message.

All of us need to love (act on our concerned for the spiritual and physical needs of each other) honestly, in the sense that the only return we seek for our sacrifice is the same kind of sacrifice in return when we need it, Matthew 7:12.

The goal of the prophet is to advise and encourage each other to right living. Right living is the way God wants us to live. But there are times when we compromise a little so as not to offend family members, co-workers or even each other. This is when the prophet must, lovingly, warn and encourage.

Yet, in performing that task they need to be certain they are not guilty of the same thing they are warning or encouraging about. You can’t take the spec out of your brother’s eye if there is a log in your own, Matthew 7:1-5. This is the proportion of your faith (how far you have actually grown), 12:6.

Romanos 12:9 (3-15) “El amor sea sin hipocresía; aborreciendo lo malo, aplicándoos a lo bueno.”

¿Conoces tu don espiritual?

Como dije anteriormente, si has madurado lo suficiente y has descubierto el don espiritual que el Espíritu Santo te ha dado, y en este caso es el don de profecía, entonces debes escuchar el consejo del versículo 12:9. En el Antiguo Testamento, el profeta era el mensajero de Dios que entregaba el mensaje de Dios y solo ese mensaje.

Todos debemos amar (actuar de acuerdo con nuestra preocupación por las necesidades espirituales y físicas de los demás) honestamente, en el sentido de que el único retorno que buscamos para nuestro sacrificio es el mismo tipo de sacrificio a cambio cuando lo necesitamos, Mateo 7:12.

El objetivo del profeta es aconsejar y alentar mutuamente para vivir correctamente. Vivir correctamente es la forma en que Dios quiere que vivamos. Pero hay momentos en que nos comprometemos un poco para no ofender a los miembros de la familia, compañeros de trabajo o incluso entre nosotros. Esto es cuando el profeta debe, con amor, advertir y alentar.

Sin embargo, al realizar esa tarea, deben asegurarse de no ser culpables de lo mismo de lo que están advirtiendo o alentando. No puede quitar la mota del ojo de su hermano si hay una viga en el suyo, Mateo 7:1-5. Esta es la proporción de tu fe (hasta dónde has crecido realmente), 12:6.

Romans 12:6 (3-15) “Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us,”

Do you know your spiritual gift?

Each of us comes to the church with different abilities and some with more then others. But we are to leave them at God’s feet and move on. You remember when Saul was called and became Paul, Acts 9? Now, I believe God took three years out of Paul’s life to undo everything he knew and replace it (Galatians 1:17-18), just like He did with Moses in the desert (for 40 years).

Yes they were special men, but the principle applies that God has prepared for each of us something we are not expecting to do… in the church, Ephesians 2:10. For that work He has given each of us a (just one) spiritual enabling, 12:6 & 1 Peter 4:10. Don’t misunderstand, whatever you bring to God He will use.

Each gift has a special warning or encouragement attached to it both in the verse it is found and, as someone has noted, in the following verses: prophecy (12:9), service (12:10), teaching (12:11), exhorts (12:12), gives (12:13), leads (12:14) and mercy (12:15).

Most of us don’t even know we’re supposed to have a spiritual gift because we don’t read the Bible to actually apply it and because we’ve been told that whatever ability you have automatically turns into one when you believe. Nothing could be further from the truth. As you grow spiritually (2 Peter 1:5-7) you will begin to discover your gift as you do away with your past life and move on to your new life.

Attentiveness involves paying attention to opportunities God presents for real change, right now.

Romanos 12:6 (3-15) “Pero teniendo dones que difieren, según la gracia que nos ha sido dada,”

¿Conoces tu don espiritual?

Cada uno de nosotros viene a la iglesia con diferentes habilidades y algunos con más que otros. Pero debemos dejarlos a los pies de Dios y seguir adelante. ¿Recuerdas cuando Saúl fue llamado y se convirtió en Pablo, Hechos 9? Ahora, creo que Dios tomó tres años de la vida de Pablo para deshacer todo lo que sabía y reemplazarlo (Gálatas 1:17-18), tal como lo hizo con Moisés en el desierto (durante 40 años).

Sí, eran hombres especiales, pero se aplica el principio de que Dios ha preparado para cada uno de nosotros algo que no esperamos hacer … en la iglesia, Efesios 2:10. Para ese trabajo, nos ha dado a cada uno de nosotros (solo una) capacitación (don) espiritual, 12:6 y 1 Pedro 4:10. No malinterpretes lo que traigas a Dios Él lo usará.

Cada don tiene una advertencia o exhortación especial conectado tanto en el verso que se encuentra y, como alguien ha notado, en los siguientes versos: profecía (12:9), servicio (12:10), enseñanza (12:11) , exhorta (12:12), da (12:13), conduce (12:14) y misericordia (12:15).

La mayoría de nosotros ni siquiera sabemos que se supone que debemos tener un don espiritual porque no leemos la Biblia para aplicarlo realmente y porque nos han dicho que cualquier habilidad que tengas se convierte automáticamente en una cuando crees. No hay nada mas lejos de la verdad. A medida que crezca espiritualmente (2 Pedro 1: 5-7) comenzará a descubrir su don a medida que abandona su vida pasada y avanza hacia su nueva vida.

Atento involucra prestar atención a las oportunidades que Dios nos presenta para un cambio real, ahora mismo.

Romans 12:3 (1-8) “For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think;”

Are you following God’s program?

With chapter 12 Paul brings us back to his purpose for this letter, which was to get believers whether Jew or Gentile to get on the same page and doing the job God had called each one to do, together.

No matter who we think we are or what we think we can do (or can’t do) God wants us to bring all that to Him and give it up, 12:1. Then He wants us to start thinking the way He wants us to think, 12:2. We have to leave behind our tendency to think from the world we came out of. So, we need to shake all that off and start thinking about our Lord and what His mission for us is.

For that new task God has given each of us a new ability (free, no charge) that we are to exercise in the body of believers to help each other grow stronger and stronger in our witness in the world. As you read verses 12:6-8 you’ll notice that every area of the believers life is covered by a spiritual gift another member of your church has.

When we’re in trouble we’re all equal and need each other. Let’s try thinking that way all the time.

Romanos 12:3 (1-8) “Porque en virtud de la gracia que me ha sido dada, digo a cada uno de vosotros que no piense más alto de sí que lo que debe pensar,”

¿Estás siguiendo el programa de Dios?

Con el capítulo 12, Pablo nos trae de vuelta a su propósito para esta carta, que era hacer que los creyentes, ya sean judíos o gentiles, se pusieran en la misma página y hicieran el trabajo que Dios los había llamado a hacer juntos.

No importa quiénes creamos que somos o qué creemos que podemos hacer (o no podemos hacer) Dios quiere que le traigamos todo eso y dejarlo, 12:1. Entonces Él quiere que comencemos a pensar de la manera que Él quiere que pensemos, 12:2. Tenemos que dejar atrás nuestra tendencia a pensar del mundo del que salimos. Entonces, necesitamos sacudirnos de todo eso y comenzar a pensar en nuestro Señor y cuál es su misión para nosotros.

Para esa nueva tarea, Dios nos ha dado a cada uno de nosotros una nueva habilidad (gratuita, sin cargo) que debemos ejercer en el cuerpo de creyentes para ayudarnos mutuamente a ser más y más fuertes en nuestro testimonio en el mundo. Al leer los versículos 12:6-8, notará que cada área de la vida de los creyentes está cubierta por un don espiritual que tiene otro miembro de su iglesia.

Cuando estamos en problemas, todos somos iguales y nos necesitamos unos a otros. Tratemos de pensar de esa manera todo el tiempo.

Sabiduría involucra reconocer y rechazar mis inclinaciones naturales de ignorar lo que es verdad.

Romans 11:25a (25–36) “For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery…”

Do you understand God’s program?

The mystery (God’s secret plan) is now no longer a secret in that part of the plan is being revealed here, in Paul’s writing, 11:24. The mystery was that there is a number, a set number, of gentiles that God is waiting for. These are all the gentiles to be saved during this time that Israel has been hardened, 11:25b. So, all those looking for a date in time for Jesus return are looking for a sign that is not coming.

The other part of the secret is that God has put His plans for Israel on hold until that number of gentile believers is reached. At that point something will happen and God will switch back to His program with Israel.

Yet, the really big secret is why, why would God bother with man at all since he is so disobedient, 11:32. For sure we can see His mercy all over every one of us whether we believer or not, but the question still stands, why? Paul’s answer is that that mystery no one will probably ever know, 11:33-34.

Wisdom involves recognizing a cause and effect relationship in life and doing something with it.

Romanos 11:25a (25-36) “Porque no quiero, hermanos, que ignoréis este misterio,”

¿Entiendes el programa de Dios?

El misterio (el plan secreto de Dios) ya no es un secreto en esa parte del plan que se revela aquí, en los escritos de Pablo, 11:24. El misterio era que hay un número, un número establecido, de gentiles que Dios está esperando. Estos son todos los gentiles que se salvarán durante este tiempo en que Israel se ha endurecido, 11:25b. Entonces, todos aquellos que buscan una fecha para el regreso de Jesús están buscando una señal que no viene.

La otra parte del secreto es que Dios ha puesto Sus planes para Israel en espera hasta que se alcance ese número de creyentes gentiles. En ese momento algo sucederá y Dios volverá a su programa con Israel.

Sin embargo, el secreto realmente grande es por qué, por qué Dios se molestaría con el hombre, ya que él es tan desobediente, 11:32. Seguro que podemos ver su misericordia sobre todos nosotros, creyentes o no, pero la pregunta sigue siendo, ¿por qué? La respuesta de Pablo es que ese misterio probablemente nadie, nunca lo entenderá, 11:33-34.

Sabiduría involucra reconocer una relación de causa y efecto en la vida y hacer algo con él.

Romans 11:20 (11-24) “Quite right, they were broken off for their unbelief, but you stand by your faith. Do not be conceited, but fear;”

Are you in God’s program?

During the course of the year I get a lot of dead branches falling off the trees in my yard. Once or twice I’ve tried piling them up to burn. When the branches have all dried up they burn quick and clean (very little smoke). But when they’re still green they make a lot of smoke.

I try not to do that because all my neighbors now know that I’m burning green wood. In a similar way the entire world knows that God has been doing something with Israel for a very long time. It gets every ones attention.

Those of us who have now become his children need to understand that our God is not afraid to discipline us in the same way He has with Israel, 11:22-23. He will take as much time as He needs to mature us and if He has to pull us off for a time, He will, 11:21.

It also reminds us that God is not finished with them either, 11:24.

Faith involves remembering all the things God has done for you already and ensuring that He has no reason not to continue.

Romanos 11:20 (11-24) “Muy cierto; fueron desgajadas por su incredulidad, pero tú por la fe te mantienes firme. No seas altanero, sino teme;”

¿Estás en el programa de Dios?

Durante el transcurso del año se me caen muchas ramas muertas de los árboles en mi patio. Una o dos veces he intentado amontonarlos para quemar. Cuando todas las ramas se han secado, se queman rápido y limpio (muy poco humo). Pero cuando todavía están verdes, hay demasiado humo.

Intento no hacerlo porque todos mis vecinos ahora saben que estoy quemando madera verde. De manera similar, el mundo entero sabe que Dios ha estado haciendo algo con Israel durante mucho tiempo. Llama la atención de todos.

Aquellos de nosotros que ahora nos hemos convertido en Sus hijos debemos entender que nuestro Dios no tiene miedo de disciplinarnos de la misma manera que lo hizo con Israel, 11:22-23. Se tomará todo el tiempo que necesite para madurarnos y si tiene que sacarnos un tiempo, lo hará, 11:21.

También nos hace recordar que Dios tampoco ha terminado con ellos, 11:24.

Fe implica recordar todas las cosas que Dios ya ha hecho por ti y asegurarte de que no tenga razón para no continuar.

Romans 11:11 (10:16-11:16) “But by their transgression has come salvation to the Gentiles, to make them jealous.”

Are you in God’s plan?

Since we understand that God has predetermined how everything will turn out, then we understand that Israel still has a part in the history of mankind. Paul explains that even while the Jews were loosing sight of what they had in their God; their God was taking advantage of their rejection to introduce His salvation plan to the Gentile (non-Jews), us.

Of course this does teach us that there are no situations from which we can’t learn something to our advantage, if not for now then for later. But in this instance God has used us Gentiles to make Israel jealous. The hope is to get them to return to their God.

And, this is the greater evidence that God has not forgotten His people Israel. Yet, there is another hidden lesson for us. Just as He hasn’t forgotten the Jews, He will not forget us. Always remember that no matter what your circumstances (good or bad) God does not forgotten His own.

Enthusiasm involves not being discouraged by external influences on your life, but seeing their value instead.

Romanos 11:11 (10:16-11:16) “Pero por su transgresión ha venido la salvación a los gentiles, para causarles celos.”

¿Estás en el plan de Dios?

Como entendemos que Dios ha predeterminado cómo resultará todo, entonces entendemos que Israel todavía tiene una parte en la historia de la humanidad. Pablo explica que incluso mientras los judíos perdían de vista lo que tenían en su Dios; su Dios estaba aprovechando su rechazo para presentar su plan de salvación a los gentiles (no judíos), nosotros.

Por supuesto, esto nos enseña que no hay situaciones en las que no podamos aprender algo a nuestro favor, si no por ahora, para más adelante. Pero en este caso, Dios nos ha usado a los gentiles para poner celoso a Israel. La esperanza es lograr que regresen a su Dios.

Y, esta es la mayor evidencia de que Dios no ha olvidado a su pueblo Israel. Sin embargo, hay otra lección oculta para nosotros. Así como no se ha olvidado de los judíos, no nos olvidará. Recuerde siempre que no importa cuáles sean sus circunstancias (buenas o malas), Dios no olvida las suyas.

Entusiasmo implica no ser desalentado por influencias externas en su vida, sino ver y aprovecharse de su valor para su vida.

Romans 9:32 (9:30-10:21) “Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though it were by works.”

Who is your Lord?

In chapters 9-11 Paul mainly talks about Israel’s failure to put their faith in their God. In chapter nine Paul shares his distress because Israel had rejected their God. He also tells us that God has the right to choose who will represent Him as well as whom He will save.

Now in chapter ten Paul tells us that although Israel was very religious they had failed to see that God was using the Law to show us it wasn’t the way to salvation from eternal damnation. In it Paul quotes exhaustively from the Old Testament showing that from the beginning God always intended salvation to be by faith and not works, 10:9-11.

So, being Jewish, Gentile or religious is not the way to be saved. Again although through the Law we discover the basic principles of living and that no one can fulfill the Law salvation can only be obtained by “confessing with your mouth Jesus as Lord” of your life.

Faith involves resting all my hopes for tomorrow on God’s proven promises rather than on man’s faltering word.

Romanos 9:32 (9:30-10:21) “¿Por qué? Porque no iban tras ella por fe, sino como por obras.”

¿Quien es tu Señor?

En los capítulos 9-11, Pablo habla principalmente del fracaso de Israel en poner su fe en su Dios. En el capítulo nueve, Pablo comparte su angustia porque Israel había rechazado a su Dios. También nos dice que Dios tiene el derecho de elegir quién lo representará y a quién salvará.

Ahora, en el capítulo diez, Pablo nos dice que aunque Israel era muy religioso, no habían podido ver que Dios estaba usando la Ley para mostrarnos que no era el camino a la salvación de la condenación eterna. En él, Pablo cita exhaustivamente del Antiguo Testamento que muestra que desde el principio Dios siempre tuvo la intención de que la salvación fuera por fe y no por obras, 10:9-11.

Entonces, ser judío, gentil o religioso no es la forma de ser salvo. Una vez más, aunque a través de la Ley descubrimos los principios básicos de la vida y que nadie puede cumplir la Ley, la salvación solo puede obtenerse “si confiesas con tu boca a Jesús por Señor” de tu vida.

Fe involucra poniendo todas mis esperanzas para el mañana en las promesas seguras del Señor en vez de las palabras inciertas del hombre.
