Exodus 23:11 (10-19) “but on the seventh day you shall let it rest and lie fallow,”
Did you rest?
Now Moses talks a little about the 4th commandment, “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.” This passage tells us the second reason Israel was to take the seventh day and the seventh year off, it was to rest and to give the poor a chance to earn their keep. It was and still is a good idea to take a break. I’m aware that physically we are capable of extra ordinary feats, but that is exactly what they are extra. Our bodies, including our brains, do much better after some rest. At the same time, for those who had servants, it was necessary to include them as part of the family and have them rest also.
Now in those days there was a problem that we still have today, the poor. The poor are people who have lost their income in some way or another and are having difficulty getting back up on their own. The Sabbath rest was part of their welfare system. On the Sabbath year the poor could go out and gather enough to help themselves through the hard time they were suffering, 23:11. Being poor is not always a matter of fault, so it’s not wise to judge, and we shouldn’t seeing as one day we could be there ourselves, 2 Corinthians 11:27. These people need our help; they do not need to be treated as if they were invalids.
Of course, it was expected that on that day you would make time to reflect on what God has done for you so far and on what He could do if you only remain faithful, 23:14b.
Gratefulness involves expressions of appreciation for His faithfulness in spite of our hardheadedness.
