1 Samuel 13:8 (1-23) “Now he waited seven days, according to the appointed time set by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal; and the people were scattering from him.”
What job are you doing?
Apparently some years later (because Jonathan was old enough to be a commander, unless Saul already had a son) Saul has established a working and professional army. And his son has been prepared for leadership, 13:3.
When Saul realized the people were leaving he took action. But, did he not remember the story of Gideon? How the Lord used 300 to route thousands? Had he not read the promise of the Lord that one man would set a thousand running? Why did he assume Samuel was not coming? Why did he think Samuel needed help to carry out his duties? And did he not remember how Joshua discovered that this was not his fight but God’s, Joshua 5:13-15? Why didn’t he just pray to God and ask where Samuel was?
In most instances these are questions that would pop up in anyone’s mind, in hindsight. But, in this instance a leader always follows orders and makes no excuses. And it doesn’t excuse the lack of faith or patience no matter what difficulties we face.
Patience involves letting God do what he does while you focus on what you should be doing.
