2 Samuel 20:1 (19:40-20:26) “Now a worthless fellow happened to be there whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjamite; and he blew the trumpet and said, ‘We have no portion in David, Nor do we have inheritance in the son of Jesse; Every man to his tents, O Israel!’”
What mission are you on?
What a way to be described. Worthless fellows were who gathered round Abemelech (Judges 9:4) and Jefthah (Judges 11:3). Certain worthless fellows surrounded a house because they wanted to rape two men, Genesis 19:4-5.
In this story before Judah went to get David back in Jerusalem they should have called on the tribes of the north to participate in the recovery of the king. In politics there are always those looking to create a problem where there is none for their own benefit.
So, Sheba was worthless in that he assumed too much, that others would follow him and work for him. Sheba was an opportunist, but he had one weakness, he had no plan. Sheba failed to be diligent enough to organize an army himself and so was betrayed by a wise woman who had his head thrown over the city wall, 20:22. Proverbs 14:12
Diligence involves applying the right amount of energy and concentration to the mission God has called us to perform.
