Isaiah 17:14 (1-14) “At evening time, behold there is terror!”
Who do you call when in trouble?
Isaiah not only predicts the fall of the alliances of Israel to Assyria, but the fall of Assyria itself. You remember the story in 2 Kings 19 about how Sennacherib had brought 185,000 men to the walls of Jerusalem to destroy it?
This is the story of Hezekiah’s cry to the Lord to help him and the people of the south. Sennacherib had already taken all the northern tribes and their friends, described by Isaiah as Aram, whose capital was Damascus. Sennacherib then sent a letter to Hezekiah, which was to be read in public to shame the people into forcing Hezekiah to surrender. But Hezekiah took the letter and in private read it to the Lord, James 1:2-12. By then two things had happened: first Sennacherib had amassed his army and second, God had dispatched His response to the letter through Isaiah. Everything Hezekiah was to do he had done, he had turned to God and God would defend him and His city.
That night the angel of the Lord visited Sennacherib’s camp and there was a great terror. But by morning they were no more; all 185,000 men were dead. There was only one survivor, Sennacherib, somehow he had received word of some trouble at home and had gone the day before to fix it (problems with the kids, what else!).
This is the same God we follow today; think carefully whose side will you be on?
Decisiveness involves making the commitment now to insure later success.
