Ephesians 5:13 (1-17) “But all things become visible when they are exposed to the light, for everything that becomes visible is light”

I always wondered why it was that so many non-believers felt that Christians act like we’re better than they. Is it something we should do consciously?

As children of light we don’t have to do much to expose the lack of good in the world. When you turn the light on in a room you don’t have to tell the light to make sure to look for darkness and expose it. Darkness just can’t hide from it.

Paul tells us that we should focus our efforts on our own spiritual development. As we mature the love of God will have it’s way of affecting those around us. We won’t have to consciously look for darkness to expose.

Although I believe there is nothing wrong with joining organizations to combat evil, there is no vendetta for us. We go throughout the world exposing evil only as we go as shining examples of what God can do.

Diligence involves applying the right amount of energy and concentration to the mission God has called us to do.

Efesios 5:13 (1-17) “Pero todas las cosas se hacen visibles cuando son expuestas por la luz, pues todo lo que se hace visible es luz.”

Siempre me preguntaba por qué era que muchos no creyentes consideran que los Cristianos actuamos como que somos mejor que ellos. Es algo que deberíamos hacer conscientemente?

Como hijos de la luz no tenemos que hacer mucho para revelar la falta del bien en el mundo. Cuando se prenda la luz en una habitación no tengo que decírselo a la luz para asegurarse de que busque oscuridad y exponerla. Oscuridad no se puede esconder.

Pablo nos dice que debemos enfocar nuestros esfuerzos en nuestro propio desarrollo espiritual. Como vamos madurando el amor de Dios tendrá su forma de afectar a los que nos rodean. No tendremos que buscar conscientemente tinieblas para exponer.

Aunque yo creo que no hay nada de malo en unirse a organizaciones para combatir el mal, no es nuestra meta. Nosotros vamos por todo el mundo exponiendo el mal solamente como ejemplos brillantes de lo que Dios puede hacer.

Diligencia involucra aplicando la cantidad correcta de energía y concentración a la misión que Dios nos ha llamado hacer.

Ephesians 2:19 (11-22) “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household,”
It is good to know that God has a plan and that we are now part of it.
When Paul wrote this letter it was still early in the development of the church and so there were still problems between Jewish and non-Jewish believers. Remember that God had chosen the people of Israel to be His people, but they had forgotten why.
Since the tragedy in the Garden of Eden God has ben trying to reconcile man to Himself. Israel was part of that program and had failed. When Jesus came His first task was to revive Israel and get it back on track doing Gods work of reconciling of man, 2:16. But they rejected and Killed Him.
So God now has turned to a new and different group to carry on that Job… the church, 2:19–22. The church consists of both Jew and non-Jew and together we are now busy offering reconciliation to any one, Jew or non-Jew, who will take it, 2:19.
Throughout the history of man God has been trying every way to get man to return to him, where he was originally designed to be. It is unfortunate that today too many churches have forgotten their reason for existance… the reconciliation of man. Apart from culture this should really be our only distinctive in the world.
Humility involves understanding how easy it is to deceive ourselves into thinking that there are things we do and don’t deserve.

Efesios 2:19 (11-22) “Así pues, ya no sois extranjeros ni advenedizos, sino que sois conciudadanos de los santos y sois de la familia de Dios,”
Es bueno saber que Dios tiene un plan y que ahora somos parte de el.
Cuando Pablo escribió esta carta era todavía temprano en el desarrollo de la iglesia y así había todavía los problemas entre creyentes judíos y no judíos. Recuerde que Dios había elegido al pueblo de Israel para ser Su pueblo, pero ellos habían olvidado el por qué.
Desde la tragedia en el Jardín de Eden Dios a estado tratando de reconciliar al hombre haciá Él. Israel era parte de aquel programa y había fallado. Cuando Jesús vino Su primera tarea era reanimar a Israel hacer el trabajo de Dios la reconciliación del hombre, 2:16. Pero ellos rechazaron y mataron a su Señor.
Entonces Dios ahora ha dado vuelta a un grupo nuevo y diferente para continuar aquel Trabajo … la iglesia, 2:19–22. La iglesia consiste tanto de Judío como de no judío y juntos estamos ahora ocupados ofreciendo reconciliación a cualquier Judío o no judío, que lo tomará, 2:19.
Por medio de la historia del hombre Dios ha tratado diferentes modo de persuadir al hombre volverle a donde originalmente fue diseñado ser. Es desafortunado que hoy demasiadas iglesias han olvidado su razón de existir… la reconciliación del hombre. Aparte de la cultura este realmente debería ser nuestro único distintivo en el mundo.
Humildad involucra entendiendo cuan fácil es engañarme en pensar que hay lo que merezco y lo que no merezco.

Ephesians 2:10 (1-10) “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”
I think it should be an encouragement to all of us that from before God created anything He had already set up ministry specifically for me. The implications are obvious.
Back then, for whatever reason He loved, of all people, me. Because of that incomprehensible love He prepared me for that ministry even when I was not even interested  in God let alone anything spiritual. He knew how long it would take for me to realize my condition and accept His offer of reconciliation. He then patiently waited for me to get motivated enough to actually do something for Him.
Just think, no matter what we think of ourselves as able or not to do, before we were born, He had already selected to perform miracles in the lives of others through us. It should make us sit down and tremble in awe of His mercy and grace towards any of us at all.
Gratefulness involves expressions of appreciation for His faithfulness in spite of our hardheadedness.

Efesios 2:10 (1-10) “Porque somos hechura suya, creados en Cristo Jesús para hacer buenas obras, las cuales Dios preparó de antemano para que anduviéramos en ellas.”
Pienso que esto debería ser un estímulo a todos nosotros porque desde antes que Dios creo cualquier cosa Él ya había establecido el ministerio expresamente para mí. Las implicaciones son obvias.
en ese tiempo, por cualquier razón Él amó, de toda la gente, a mí. A causa de esa incomprehenseable amor Él me preparó para aquel ministerio aun cuando no estuve interesado en Dios sin mencionar nada de lo espiritual. Él sabía cuanto esto tomaría para mí para realizar mi condición y aceptar Su oferta de reconciliación. Él entonces con paciencia me esperó a ser motivado bastante para hacer realmente algo para Él.
Pienselo, no importando lo que pensamos de nuestra capacidad de hacer o no hacer, antes de que naciéramos, Él había seleccionado ya para realizar milagros en las vidas de otros por nosotros. Debería hacernos sentarnos y temblar en el temor de Su misericordia y gracia hacia cualquiera de nosotros en verdad.
Gratitud involucra expresiones de agradecimiento por Su fidelidad a pesar de nuestra terquedad.

Ephesians 1:16 (15-23) “I… do not cease giving thanks for you, while making mention of you in my prayers;”

Last week I told you that we needed to speak well of or praise God to all our believing or non-believing friends. And I still believe this is important. But it is also important to speak well of or praise those faithful brothers and sisters in the Lord to the Lord Himself, when we pray, 1:15.

When we recognize how obedient and loyal, in the face of trials and persecution, they have been we need to let God know that we approve. Not because God doesn’t know, but because God wants to hear our report.

It means we’re paying attention to each other and it means we recognize the difference between loyalty and disloyalty, obedience and disobedience, (loyalty and obedience being the products of faith). When we recognize how God is working in the lives of others, our brothers and sisters we gain insight in how God is trying to work in our own lives.

Attentiveness involves looking, listening and learning the commands of God, the will of God and the way of God.

Efesios 1:16 (15-23) “no ceso de dar gracias por vosotros, haciendo mención de vosotros en mis oraciones;”

La semana pasada les dije que teníamos que hablar bien o alabar a Dios o a todos nuestro amigos que no creen. Y todavía creo que es importante. Pero también es importante que hable bien de o alabar los fieles hermanos y hermanas en el Señor al Señor mismo, cuando oramos, 1:15.

Cuando reconocemos cómo obedientes y leales, ante las pruebas y persecución han sido tenemos que dejar que Dios sabe que aprobamos. No porque Dios no lo sabía, pero porque Dios quiere escuchar nuestro informe.

Significa que estamos prestando atención a los demás y eso significa que reconocer la diferencia entre lealtad y deslealtad, la obediencia y la desobediencia, (lealtad y obediencia son los productos de fe).  Cuando reconocemos que Dios está trabajando en la vida de los demás, nuestros hermanos y hermanas, hemos de comprender cómo Dios está tratando de trabajar en nuestras propias vidas.

Ser atento involucra mirar, otorgar y aprender los mandamientos de Dios, la voluntad de Dios y el camino de Dios.

Ephesians 1:5 (1-14) “He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will,”

I know that the subject of predestination is very sensitive to many, but I think it is because we try to understand it from the wrong perspective. Usually we try to understand it and even explain it from the point of view of two separate beings struggling for control over life.

Paul suggested a better way to look at it when in verses 1 and 2 he explained that he was an apostle only because of the will of his father God. Paul was not looking to be a Christian let alone an apostle. This was the will of God.

Who can judge the loving intensions of a father towards his children? A good father gives his children tasks designed to help them grow up and be mature adults (children were never intended to be children for ever). Each child has to be motivated differently and still follow all the house rules.

Predestination is part of God’s plan to guide His children where they need to be so they can be happiest in their lives. And, like a father is superior to his children he knows best whether the child understands in the moment or not.

As a parent myself I have learned something about these thing from experience and from studying my heavenly Father’s words. From this perspective I understand that God knows what He is doing in His election and adoption of some and not others.

Discernment involves maintaining our focus on God’s goals as we evaluate people, problems and things.

Efesios 1:5 (1-14) “nos predestinó para adopción como hijos para sí mediante Jesucristo, conforme al beneplácito de su voluntad,”

Sé que el tema de la predestinación es muy sensitiva a muchos, pero creo que es porque lo estamos tratando de comprender de una perspectiva errónea. Por lo general tratamos de entender, e incluso explicar desde el punto de vista de dos seres diferentes que luchan por el control de la vida.

Pablo sugiere una mejor manera de verlo cuando en los versículos 1 y 2 explicó que era un apóstol solamente por la voluntad de su padre Dios. Pablo no estaba buscando ser un Cristiano y mucho menos un apóstol. Esto fue la voluntad de Dios.

¿Quién puede juzgar las intenciones amorosas de un padre hacia sus hijos? Un buen padre da a sus hijos tareas diseñadas para ayudarles a crecer y ser adultos maduros (chicos no son intentados ser chicos para siempre). Cada hijo tiene que ser motivada diferentemente y al mismo tiempo seguir todas las reglas de la casa.

Predestinación es parte del plan de Dios para guiar a sus hijos en los que es necesaria para que puedan ser más felices en sus vidas. Y, al igual que el padre es superior a sus hijos, el sabe lo que es mejor si el niño lo entiende en ese momento o no.

Como padre que soy yo mismo he aprendido algo sobre estas cosas por mi experiencia y en el estudio de las palabras de mi Padre celestial. Desde este punto de vista entiendo que Dios sabe lo que está haciendo en su elección y adopción de algunos y no a otros.

Discernimiento involucra mantener un enfoque en las metas de Dios al evaluar gente, problemas y cosas.

Ephesians 1:3 (1-14) “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.”

In the Greek the word Paul uses here for “blessed” means to speak well of or to praise. And well we should speak well of God and praise Him for all He has done for us. He loved us, He choose us (1:4), He adopted us (1:5) and He has sealed us with His own Holy Spirit (1:13).

But to whom will we speak these words of praise towards God? To each other, Yes! I think we should be constantly reminding each other of the unmerited generosity of God towards those who did not recognize Him, but now do.

Yet I think we shouldn’t limit our witness of the things God has done, is doing and will do for those who are experiencing it. We should not be afraid to share with those who do not know God, at least the one we know, what we are experiencing that blessing (His love, election, adoption and sealing,) unique to us.

Enthusiasm involves discovering how your life can motivate others to praise God and change.

Efesios 1:3 (1-14) “Bendito sea el Dios y Padre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, que nos ha bendecido con toda bendición espiritual en los lugares celestiales en Cristo,”

En el griego la palabra Pablo utiliza aquí para decir “bendito” significa hablar bien o alabar. Y así tenemos o debemos que hablar bien de Dios y alabarle por todo lo que ha hecho por nosotros. Nos amo, nos eligió (1:4), nos adoptó (1:5) y Él nos ha sellado con su propio Espíritu Santo (1:13).

Pero a quien le hablamos estas palabras de alabanza hacia Dios? Uno al otro, ¡Sí! Yo creo que debemos estar constantemente recordando a todos los hermanos en la Fe de la inmerecida generosidad de Dios hacia aquellos que antes no le reconocimos, pero ahora si.

Sin embargo, creo que no deberíamos limitar nuestro testimonio de las cosas que Dios ha hecho, está haciendo y hará por aquellos que lo están experimentando. No debemos tener miedo de compartir con aquellos que no conocen a Dios, por lo menos el que conocemos, lo que estamos viviendo esa bendición (su amor, elección, adopción y sellado) exclusivo de nosotros.

El entusiasmo involucra el descubrir cómo su vida puede motivar a otras para alabar a Dios y cambiar.

Colossians 3:19 (18-21) “love your wives and do not be embittered against them.”

Why would I be embittered? Is she making demands on my life that make me feel uncomfortable? Isn’t her roll to encourage me to do God’s will, in His way and at His time?

Is it just that too many times we husbands assume that putting a roof over her head and food in the refrigerator is enough to keep her busy and out of our way. For some reason some of us have forgotten that she is our partner. What happened to us that we seem to have lost our relationship with the one who was to be our life partner, our soul mate? Is it wrong friends, to much TV?

Or is it that when we entered into that relationship we were lying as much to ourselves as we were to her? So, how can you foolishly get angry with her when it was you who lied? Rather than getting emotional I think husbands should “man up” and be the men God intended you to be.

God made them our equal and in His image. He made them to help us achieve His goals. Goals He expects us to complete. We should wake up and be thankful for all the help He has conceded us. Especially for our custom designed assistant… the wife!

Sensitivity involves understanding when my preferences hinder the work I’ve been sent to do.

Colosenses 3:19 (18-21) “amad a vuestras mujeres y no seáis ásperos con ellas.”

¿Por qué sería amargado yo? ¿Me esta haciendo demandas en mi vida que me hace sientir incómodo? ¿No es su papel el de animarme hacer la voluntad de Dios, en Su manera y en Su tiempo?

El problema es que demasiadas veces nosotros los maridos asumimos que poniendo un techo sobre la cabeza y el alimento en el refrigerador es suficiente en mantener la ocupada y dejarme quieto. Por alguna razón algunos de nosotros nos hemos olvidado que es nuestro socio. ¿Qué nos paso que parecemos haber perdido nuestra relación con el que fue de ser nuestro socio de la vida, nuestra alma gemela? ¿Fue malas amistades, o demasiado televisión?

¿O fue que cuándo entramos en esa relación nosotros estábamos mintiendo tanto a nosotros mismos como a ella? ¿Así, cómo puédes insensatamente enojarse con ella cuándo fue usted que mentiste? En vez de emocionarse yo pienso que maridos deben “aceptar su papel” y ser los hombres que Dios intento que fueramos.

Dios las hizo nuestro igual y en Su imagen. Los hizo para ayudarnos lograr Sus metas. Objetivos que nos espera completar. Debemos despertarnos y debemos estar agradecido para toda la ayuda que nos ha concedido. ¡Especialmente para nuestra ayudante especialmente consebido… la esposa!

Ser sensitivo implica comprender cuando mis preferencias impiden el trabajo que he sido enviado a hacer.

Colossians 33:12 (12-17) “So, as those who have been chosen of God,”

So what should we expect from God?

In verse 12 we are told that God has made us “holy and His beloved”. That means that He has separated us from the motivations of the world and that He loves us. Isn’t this all that we need, to know that somewhere someone loves and cares for us? In the eyes of the most important and powerful person in existence we are of extreme value, He loves us.

And to know that God has a plan for our lives and that is why He has separated us from the rest of the world. This is why the world looks at us and asks if we’re better than they are. Our answer has got to be yes… and no!

Yes because we are the chosen of God and they are not. What a great place to be in with no worries about the future. Yet we must admit, no because we still live in these bodies that are subject to this imperfect world with its old imperfect habits. We still sin, but not like everybody else we can actually hope to eventually conquer those tendencies. But more important than that, we can actually gain forgiveness from our God daily because, He loves us.

Security involves learning to deposit all my trust in the One who will be there for me right now as well as tomorrow.

Colosenses 3:12 (12-17) “Entonces, como escogidos de Dios,”

¿Entonces qué debemos esperar nosotros de Dios?

En el verso 12 somos dichos que Dios nos ha hecho “santo y Su amado“. Esto significa que nos ha separado de los motivos del mundo y que nos ama. ¿No es esto todo que necesitamos, para saber que en algún lugar alguien nos ama y nos cuida? En los ojos de la persona más importante y poderosa en la existencia tenemos un valor extremo, El nos ama.

Y saber que Dios tiene un plan para nuestra vida y por eso El nos ha separado del resto del mundo. Por esto el mundo nos mira y se pregunte si somos mejores que ellos. ¡Nuestra respuesta tiene que ser sí… y no!

Sí porque somos escogido de Dios y ellos no son. Es un lugar buenísimo de estar con ningunas preocupaciones acerca del futuro. Sin embargo tenemos que admitir, no, porque todavía vivimos en estos cuerpos que son susceptibles a este mundo imperfecto con sus hábitos imperfectos viejos. Nosotros todavía pecamos, pero no como todos los demás nosotros podemos esperar realmente conquistar finalmente esas tendencias. Pero más importante que eso, nosotros podemos ganar realmente el perdón de nuestro Dios diariamente porque, nos ama.

Seguridad, involucra aprendiendo a depositar toda mi confianza en el Único quien estará ahí para mi ahora mismo al igual que mañana.

Colossians 3:5 (5-17) “Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead…”

Our sin, the sin that separates us from God is the sin of idolatry. Idolatry occurs when the one who should be the focus of our lives isn’t. When we displace God (the God of the Bible) for the sake of some other person, place or thing we have committed idolatry.

Most of the time we picture, in our minds, those old black and white movies. People in costume serving up something to a large metal image with a fire in its belly. It is the way it may have been expressed eons ago. Today, there is not much of that, but the same idea is present. We’re looking for success or peace in our lives and haven’t, in our own efforts, found it so we look for help or a distraction. Whatever we pour into the void of our need becomes our God, our satisfier.

The result of idolatry is the exact opposite of what we were looking for. Anger, wrath, malice, slander and abusive speech are not signs of success or peace, 3:8. Are these the kind of gifts we should expect from our God? Don’t we all want a God who will bring to us love, fairness and encouragement? I know of only one God that can deliver on that, 1 Timothy 2:5.

Wisdom involves recognizing and rejecting my natural inclination to explain away what I know to be true.

Colosenses 3:5 (5-17) “Por tanto, considerad los miembros de vuestro cuerpo terrenal como muertos…”

Nuestro pecado, el pecado que nos separa de Dios es el pecado de idolatría. La idolatría ocurre cuando el que debe ser el foco de nuestro vive no es. Cuando desplazamos a Dios (el Dios de la Biblia) por algunas otra persona, lugar o cosa hemos cometido idolatría.

Gran parte del tiempo nosotros nos imaginamos esas películas blanquinegras viejas. Donde las personas en disfraz sirven una imagen grande de metálica con un fuego en su vientre. Es la manera en que puede haber sido expresado miles de años atrás. Hoy, no hay mucho de eso, pero la misma idea esta presente. Buscamos éxito o paz en nuestras vidas sin encontraros en nuestros propios esfuerzos, así que buscamos ayuda o una distracción. Lo que buscamos llenar ese vacío llega ser nuestro Dios, quien nos satisface.

El resultado de idolatría es justo lo contrario de lo que buscábamos. El enojo, la ira, la maldad, la calumnia y discurso abusivo no son señal de éxito ni paz, 3:8. ¿Son éstos la clase de dones que debemos esperar de nuestro Dios? ¿No deseamos un Dios que hace no trae nos dará amor, justicia y ánimo? Sé de sólo un Dios que puede cumplir esas necesidades, 1 de Timoteo 2:5.

Sabiduría involucra reconocer y rechazar mis inclinaciones naturales de ignorar lo que es verdad.

Colossians 3:1 (1–17) “keep seeking the things above, where Christ is,”

Have you ever noticed a child crossing the street with dad, they are holding his hand and looking up at him to see when it’s ok to cross?

It never ceases to amaze me how often we first go to our old habits or turn to the unbelieving world for guidance. It’s like watching teens look to each other for advice because peer pressure keeps them from turning to an adult… like their own parents. All those kids are in the same place suffering the same confusion, and yet turning to each other for guidance. Can you see how silly and tragic this picture looks?

Yet as believers we do the same thing. The world is what we turned away from or did we forget? Jesus told us that we are not of this world, John 17. When faced with any difficulty we must turn first to our God and then to our brothers and sisters in the faith. The world has nothing for us. It will not old my hand. It will not tell me when it safe to go on.

Wisdom involves understanding our lives from God’s perspective.

Colosenses 3:1 (1–17) “buscad las cosas de arriba, donde está Cristo sentado a la diestra de Dios”

¿Han visto un niño cruza la calle con su papa, aguantando su mano y miran arriba para ver cuándo está bien cruzar?

Nunca deja de asombrarme con qué frecuencia nosotros vamos primero a nuestros hábitos viejos o volvemos al mundo perdido para dirección. Es como mirar a jóvenes buscar del uno al otro para consejo porque la presión ejercida por sus amigos los mantiene de buscar a un adulto… como sus propios padres. Todo esos niños están en el mismo lugar sufriendo la misma confusión, y buscan del uno al otro para consejo. ¿Puede ver cuán tonto y trágico se parece todo esto?

Mas como creyentes nosotros hacemos la misma cosa. El mundo es lo que habíamos dejado atrás o ¿nos hemos olvidado? Jesús nos dijo que nosotros no somos de este mundo, Juan 17. Cuando encarado con cualquier dificultad nosotros debemos buscar primero a nuestro Dios y entonces a nuestros hermanos y hermanas en la fe. El mundo no tiene nada para nosotros. No me aguantara la mano. No me dirá cuando es seguro pasar.

Sabiduría involucra entendiendo nuestras vidas desde la perspectiva de Dios.
